How to check what ChatGPT says about your company
Run these checks with web search enabled whenever possible. That way you can inspect the sources behind the answer instead of judging only the wording.
There is no fixed public ranking for this. Results can change with the query, context and time, so use a small set of repeatable tests rather than one screenshot.
1. Can ChatGPT find the company at all?
Search for the company name together with its city or industry. Ask for the offer, target customer and sources. Check whether the description is current and whether the company website appears among the sources.
2. How does it understand the brand?
Ask for a five-sentence summary of the brand, what it does differently and which customer problem it solves. Generic answers often reveal generic source material.
3. Do you appear without your brand name?
Describe the customer need and ask for several companies worth checking. This is closer to how a new customer searches before knowing your brand.
4. Who does ChatGPT compare you with?
Ask for the main competitors and compare their offer, specialization, website messaging and public information.
5. What does it see as your strongest advantages?
Ask for three clear advantages and the source behind each one. If there is no concrete answer, review what proof your website actually provides.
6. What information is missing?
Ask which important company details could not be verified: services, service area, specialization, projects, contact information or conflicting data.
7. Can it explain the offer simply?
Ask ChatGPT to explain what a potential customer can buy from the company and why someone would choose it.
8. Does it know your case studies?
Ask for projects or case studies and what was actually delivered. A portfolio with context is easier to understand than a gallery of images alone.
9. Which customer questions does your website answer?
Ask for ten questions the site answers clearly and ten important questions it does not answer well enough. Use the gaps to plan FAQs, service pages and useful guides.
10. Finish with a full brand visibility review
Ask for a practical review of the website, service information, reviews, mentions and projects, followed by ten specific fixes. Treat it as a checklist, not an official score.
Technical check: crawler access
OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for search discovery. OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are separate controls, so search access and model-training preferences can be managed independently.
Questions
Is one query enough to judge visibility?
No. Test several query types, including searches with the brand name, without it, competitor comparisons and customer-style questions.
Does a missing mention mean the website is bad?
Not necessarily. Crawler access, the amount of concrete information, external sources and the specific query can all affect the result.
Can ChatGPT referral traffic be measured?
Yes. OpenAI documents that ChatGPT Search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com.
What to do after the test
Save the answers, cited sources and repeated gaps. Then fix the parts that matter to customers: clear services, specialization, case studies, FAQs and consistent company information.
